What exactly is body detoxification?

The body's natural and constant process of eliminating poisons or toxins through the liver, kidneys, colon, lymph and skin. Although our bodies do it naturally every day, we do sometimes need an extra step to flush our systems. Through detoxification, we can successfully assist the body to eliminate dangerous toxins, chemicals, metals, parasites and other unwanted substances.
Basically, detoxification means cleaning the blood. It does this mainly by removing waste from the blood in the liver, where toxins are processed for elimination. It's all about cleaning and nourishing the body from the inside out. By removing and eliminating toxins, detoxifying can help protect you from disease and renew your ability to maintain optimum health.

If the toxins we consume cannot be destroyed by our digestive system, detoxified by the liver, or eliminated by the lymph system (an important part of our immune system), they begin to build up. As they accumulate, they start to affect the body which can result in slow metabolism, low energy, reduced immunity, and can lead to serious chronic diseases.
A detox cleans out body waste deposits. After a cleanse, when the body starts rebalancing and energy levels rise, people tend to feel healthier, younger, more lively and, in general, better about themselves and their lives.
The list of health issues that can be helped by detoxifying the body is endless, but here are some of the most common reasons why people choose to do it:
  • Purify liver, kidney and blood
  • Eliminate years of built up internal waste
  • Increase energy and focus
  • Lose weight
  • Ease chronic pain
  • Look younger
  • Boost immune system
  • Cure high blood pressure
  • Get rid of acne
  • Simply feel fantastic

If you want to reduce the toxins that are already in your body, the best thing you can do is give your body's natural detoxification system the tools it needs. Here are some ways to do that:

Chlorella and cilantro extract: when used in a team can make a dent in your level of aluminum, a metal notoriously difficult to remove from the body.  Once cilantro binds to aluminum, the chlorella will then hasten its exit  through your kidneys. Chlorella also supports your liver's detoxification enzymes.
If you want to try chelation, you'll need to eat cilantro every day. Try eating two tablespoons of cilantro pesto each day for at least three weeks. When you add chlorella with the cilantro, it will bind to the mercury and help flush it from the system. You can try garlic for this also. You can also simply add fresh cilantro to your food each day. You can cook the cilantro into soup and pasta, add it to salads or use it as a topping for meat dishes. Or try this recipe:

Cilantro Chelation Pesto
4 cloves garlic
1/3 cup Brazil nuts (selenium)
1/3 cup sunflower seeds (cysteine)
1/3 cup pumpkin seeds (zinc, magnesium)
2 cups packed fresh cilantro (coriander, Chinese parsley) (vitamin A)
2/3 cup flaxseed oil
4 tablespoons lemon juice (vitamin C)
2 tsp dulse powder
Sea salt to taste

Process the cilantro and flaxseed oil in a blender until the coriander is chopped. Add the garlic, nuts and seeds, dulse and lemon juice and mix until the mixture is finely blended into a paste. Add a pinch to sea salt to taste and blend again. Store in dark glass jars if possible.

Selenium: is a valuable mineral that protects against mercury by binding and inactivating it. Brazil nuts are a primo source of selenium: Just three or four nuts will yield in excess of 200 micrograms-enough for your day's needs. Other good sources include egg yolks, liver, kidneys, and indeed all muscle meats, such as lean beef, lamb and pork. Plant-based sources include onions, broccoli, asparagus, garlic and tomatoes.

Cruciferous Vegetables:  provide a boost to your liver's detoxification enzymes. Cruciferous choices: kale, brussels sprouts, radishes, bok choy, cabbage, turnips, collard greens, kohlrabi, rutabaga, cauliflower, and broccoli.

Glutamine: an amino acid that keeps intestinal immune cells healthy-and your gut holds 70 percent of your immune system. Low levels of glutamine are associated with impaired detoxification.
To get enough glutamine, use food sources that include beef, chicken, fish, beans, eggs, spinach, and two excellent detoxifiers-cabbage and beets.

Garlic: contains large amounts of sulfur, a hard-working element required for successful detoxification of unwanted chemicals in the liver. Garlic can aid your detox system by safely reducing harmful gut bacteria and parasites. If you don't want to eat it raw - which I think is best - you can take Garlic supplements. Other sulfur-containing foods include meat, fish, chicken, and the cruciferous vegetables that I mentioned above.

To support your liver in its detoxification efforts, try milk thistle and alpha lipoic acid.  Milk thistle's active ingredient, silymarin, has been used to reduce the toxic effects from a wide variety of liver poisons such as death-cap mushrooms, alcohol, and acetaminophen. It also reduces liver inflammation, is useful in fatty liver disease (which now affects over 70 million Americans), and improves glucose metabolism.
Alpha lipoic acid, the "universal antioxidant," recycles other important antioxidants, such as vitamin C, vitamin E and glutathione. It has been used in its high-dose intravenous form to treat acute liver failure and can also help with blood- sugar control.
Nature's Way Thisilyn has milk thistle, alpha lipoic acid, and other liver-supporting elements, including n-acetyl cysteine, a building block of glutathione.

Omega-3 fats, which are found mainly in deep-sea, cold-water fish like salmon, mackerel, herring and sardines. Vitamin D, which you can get from the sun and from the same marine sources that supply omega-3s. Taking these nutrients you'll help your body run better-including your detoxification system.

Try mini-fasts There is more evidence to support the health benefits of 12- to-24-hour fasts as often as once a week. For example, for a 12-hour fast, you might wake up Saturday morning and just sip herbal tea and water until dinner, which could be a light meal of chicken or fish, salad and a piece of fruit.
The key here would be to consider your short fast as an opportunity to slow down. Ignore the television and the morning newspapers.
Plan ahead and get your chores done before your day of fasting. This will give you more time for prayer or meditation. It's a ritual that can help you work in a much-needed break.

Recipes for a detox-body wrap using essential oils, herbs and clays
Be sure to drink plenty of water before and after a detox body wrap.

A homemade detox body wrap contains soothing clay, herbs and oils work by drawing toxins out through your skin pores and by helping improve circulation and lymphatic drainage. You can make the blend at home a do-it-yourself detox body wrap will take just minutes to prepare and will leave you feeling refreshed.

Step 1 Heat 2 cups water to boiling.
Step 2 Add 1/4 cup sea salt to the boiling water and stir until the salt dissolves completely.
Step 3 Pour 2 tbsp. olive oil,  and 2 tbsp. of an essential oil such as lavender, sage, lemon, rosemary, sandalwood, lemongrass, or grapefruit into the hot salt water solution.
Step 4 Mix in 1 cup bentonite clay and stir. Let the clay dissolve to create a paste. If necessary, add more clay to reach the proper consistency. As an alternative, use green clay instead of bentonite. Let the clay cool just enough so it's tolerable to the skin.

Take a 10 -15 minute warm shower before applying the wrap  to exfoliate the skin and open the pores in perpetration for the body wrap. Use a gentle exfoliating scrub to remove any dead skin. (Make your own exfoliating scrub - mix 1/2 cup of raw, granulated sugar with 1/4 of sea salt, 5-6 drops of English Lavender and 1 tablespoon of good, extra virgin olive oil.) Exfoliate the entire body, gently scrubbing the skin in an upward, circular motion, then pat yourself dry. Dry out the tub after your shower.

Step 5 Cover your naked body with the clay paste. Wrap yourself in a clean sheet, pulling the sheet tight and securing it.
Step 6 Lie down and relax in the tub for one hour while wrapped.
Step 7 Rinse off in the shower, initially with the sheet on until most of the clay runs down the drain. Take the sheet off and shower normally. Place the sheet in the washing machine and wash it twice. Use it for your next body wrap to avoid staining a new sheet. Rinse the tub out thoroughly.

Salt
Both sea salt and Epsom salts are excellent choices for body wrap solutions. When Epsom salt--the common name for magnesium sulfate--is absorbed through the skin, it can reduce fluid build-up and tissue swelling, promote the release of toxins from the body and act as a natural exfoliator and calming agent.  Use approximately 1/4 cup of salt for every cup of clay used.

Epsom Salt Scrub Recipe

Massage a handful of epsom salts, mixed with 1 tablespoon of  olive oil, and a drop or two of your favorite essential oil (my favorite is Eucalyptus and Lemon) over wet skin to cleanse, exfoliate and soften the rough spots.  Rinse well.

Essential Oils
Add 2 tbsp. of lavender, sage, lemon, rosemary, sandalwood, lemongrass, or grapefruit essential oils to the primary mixture for an added skin stimulating boost. These natural oils support circulation and toning of the skin, they also support skin health and the reduction of inflammation on the skin that may increase inches on the body. These essential oils in particular have muscle relaxing properties, as well as acting as skin cleansers and conditioners. Typically, a body wrap solution using 1 cup of clay includes up to 2 tbsp. of one or more essential oils.

Herbs
Powdered alfalfa, chamomile, lavender, ginger, calendula, basil, rose petals and rosehips are all herbs traditionally used in body wrap mixtures. You can add as much as 1 cup of the powdered herb to the clay paste before applying. Or some recipes - 1 cup of herb steeped in a sink of hot water - soak towels wring out and wrap your self, rest for 10 minutes - then apply the clay mixture of your choice.  These herbs have a calming effect on the nervous system and are traditionally used to decrease muscle pain and tissue inflammation.

Cellulite Body Wrap recipe:
Combine 8 drops of grapefruit essential oil with 2 drops each of thyme, fennellavender, geranium and juniper berry essential oils. Add 2 cups of almond oil, mix well, and then pour the mixture into a plastic squirt bottle. apply wrap yourself and relax for 30 to 40 minutes.

Another recipe:
Step 1
Prepare the room by placing the drop cloth over your bed or sofa. Light scented candles and choose soothing background music. Make sure the room is comfortably warm and that you are creating a relaxing environment for yourself.
Step 2
Fill the sink with hot water, the cup of herbs and 2 tbsp. olive or almond oil. While the mixture steeps, get into a warm shower and gently exfoliate with a sea sponge or loofah to open your pores. Use a gentle exfoliating scrub to remove any dead skin. (Make your own exfoliating scrub - mix 1/2 cup of raw, granulated sugar with 1/4 of sea salt, 5-6 drops of English Lavender and 1 tablespoon of good, extra virgin olive oil.)
Step 3
Place two of your towels in the herb mixture and let soak for 1 to 2 minutes after your shower. Wring out the towels, wrap yourself up and go lie down. Relax and enjoy for 10 minutes.
Step 4
Mix 2 cups almond oil, 2 drops peppermint, juniper and lemon essential oil together . Lay three clean towels on the bed or sofa.
Step 5
Massage the oil mixture all over your body, paying particular attention to any problem areas. Use long smooth strokes to relax your muscles and release tension.
Step 6
Lie down and cover yourself with the remaining three towels, creating a warm cocoon for yourself and allowing the oils to penetrate your skin. You can tuck the towels tightly around your limbs for more of a wrap effect. Experiment with deep breathing or creative visualization techniques to enhance relaxation.
Herbs
The herbs chamomile, ginger root, alfalfa, burdock root, rosehips and aloe vera are often used in body wraps. Chamomile is considered beneficial for the nerves and acts as an anti-inflammatory. Ginger root may ease muscle cramping and spasms, stimulate blood circulation, and warm the skin. Alfalfa, relieves joint pain and benefits skin disorders and that burdock root removes toxins and helps eliminate excess fluid. Rosehips is anti-aging, nourishing and helps to reduce scars and pigmentation on the skin. Aloe vera stimulates cell regeneration and has skin-healing properties.

A word of caution for any parents planning on using aromatherapy oils on their children. Please exercise caution while using essential oils. Its best to stick to mild oils and less is best. Since essential oils are highly concentrated, make sure that they are properly diluted with carrier oils. Improper dilution can result in skin irritation for your little ones. Don't let your children be alone while using essential oils.

Oregano - Extremely useful as a remedy for coughs and asthma, research has confirmed oregano's use as an antibacterial and anti fungal treatment for all manner of respiratory ailments. This wonderful herb can also help to stimulate the appetite and has been found to be beneficial in alleviating tooth pain. Oregano has a spicy, almost minty flavor that makes it a very popular addition to the kitchen.. . .
Experiment making a tasty Oregano-Pepper Cheese as a special treat for your next get together.

Use 8-10 sprigs of fresh oregano
3 cloves of finely sliced, fresh garlic
2 red chilies or 1/4 teaspoon of dried chili flakes
8 oz mozzarella cut into small, bite size chunks
1 Tablespoons each green, pink and black whole peppercorns
1 teaspoons of small capers
2 cups of good olive oil

Rinse the oregano sprigs and dry well, strip the leaves from the stems and set aside.
Peel and finely slice each clove of garlic
Wearing gloves, rinse and slice into rings the chilies, removing the seeds.
Cut the mozzarella into small bite size chunks.

In a canning or screw top jar, start layering the ingredients until they are all used. Pour the olive oil over the layers until they are covered and then tightly close the jar. Be sure to leave some head room in the jar!
Marinate the mixture for at least 1 week. Serve with fresh rustic or Italian bread slices or crackers.

Homemade Oregano butter is a tasty variation as well. In a mixer, blend 1-2 bunches of oregano, 1-2 cloves of peeled garlic and 2 sticks of sweet, salted butter. Serve on bread or crackers. This is a great compliment to soups, salads and pasta dishes. It is healthy too!
