7 Common Ailments
The reality of all the nasty bugs that the school setting can bring. Using Essential Oils to Combat them.
Head Lice - According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, up to one in four elementary school children in the U.S. get head lice each year. A child can catch head lice from another child during play, or by sharing items such as combs, headphones, towels and beds.
Did you know that the most common lice remedy is made with lindane?
Lindane's chemical name is gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane or benzene hexachloride (BHC). This is a hazardous polychlorinated pesticide that has been recommended by some experts to be banned! It is hazardous to ones health and has shown to cause liver, kidney and neurological damage.
Essential oils are a non-toxic and safe alternative for getting rid of head lice compared to traditional pharmaceutical solutions. A number of essential oils have been shown to be effective—along with combing—in eliminating head lice: Tea TreeLavenderEucalyptusGeranium, Pine, ThymeLemonRosemary.
Best and cheapest way: with child bending over the bathtub, brush the hair down into the tub and put loads of the cheapest conditioner or coconut oil, mixed with any of these essential oils: Tea Tree, Lavender, Eucalyptus, Geranium, Pine, ThymeLemonRosemary on the hair. (Conditioner effectively immobilizes the bugs.) Using a fine-tooth nit comb, comb through small sections of the hair from scalp to end very methodically. Flick the accumulated conditioner off into the tub with each stroke of the comb; you’ll see little black specks which are the lice. Rinse, then shampoo with "shampoo and a few drops of tea tree" essential oil. Do this religiously for 9 days, which is the life cycle of the louse. Tips: short hairstyles are easiest when treating lice; keep hair contained in a ponytail or braids to minimize the chance of spreading.

Or: Mix 2 ounces of a carrier oil (olive oil or jojoba are two good choices) with 15 to 20 drops of your preferred essential oil. Apply to the scalp using cotton balls. Leave this mixture on the scalp and hair overnight—at least 12 hours, cover hair with a shower cap. Comb out and shampoo, rinse, and repeat. An alternative approach is to mix the 15 to 20 drops of essential oil in 4 ounces of rubbing alcohol. Place the mixture in a spray bottle and saturate the hair with it. Again, leave it on for at least 12 hours. Remember—combing out the hair is absolutely essential to remove the lice!

Pink eye (or conjunctivitis) is caused by a virus and results in redness and swelling of the mucous membrane that lines the eyelid. It is very common and very contagious. Most cases of pink eye run their course within a period of 7-10 days. But because pink eye can be irritating and uncomfortable, most people are eager to find a remedy.

The first three essential oils I would turn to in addressing pink eye are: Tea Tree, Lavender, and Eucalyptus. These oils may be applied in a couple of ways:

  • Diffuse near the person affected, especially at bedtime
  • Rub oils on the boney area that circles the eye, avoiding direct contact with the eye or letting it drip down, etc. You may squint a bit because of the cooling effect for a few minutes, but it will stop.

Because pink eye is contagious, it is good to take preventive measures by washing hands and refraining from sharing towels or wash cloths.

Recipe Especially for Conjunctivitis:

1 teaspoon fractionated coconut oil
3 drops of
Tea Tree
3 drops of
Lemon
2 drops of
Helichrysum Italicum
2 drops of Frankincense
2 drops of
Lavender
1 drop of Cypress
1 drop of
Eucalyptus
1 drop of Lemongrass

Mix all ingredients and rub mixture on the boney area that circles the eye, avoiding direct contact with the eye or letting it drip down, etc.

Impetigo one of the most common skin infections among kids. It can be spread by contact with infected skin, or touching things like clothing, towels, and bed linens that have been touched by infected skin. It usually starts as a red area, which can be painful and itchy. After a day or so, the infected area may become oozy with a characteristic golden color crusty scab. If not treated, the infection becomes more widespread.

Treatment with essential oils is especially effective because bacteria cannot form a resistance to an essential oil like it can to an antibiotic. Two oils that are typically used to treat impetigo are Tea Tree and Lavender. Both of these oils are strong antiseptic oils, they are also non-toxic and non-irritating as well.

Mix Tea Tree and/or Lavender essential oil half-and-half with a carrier oil (such as jojoba, or olive oil) and apply to affected area, several times a day. Other essential oils that help heal the skin and diminish the condition include Lemongrass, Eucalyptus, and Helichrysum.

Ringworm is not a worm, it is a fungal infection of the skin that grows outward from the center and develops a red ring appearance on the skin. It is most common on the scalp but it can also appear on the body. It is contagious and can be stubborn to treat. Expose the area to natural sunlight as much as possible.

Some essential oils with anti-fungal properties that are used to treat ringworm include: Tea Tree, Chamomile, Geranium, Lavender, Patchouli, and Sandalwood.

A common recipe is 1 drop of Lavender
2 drops of Tea Tree
mixed in 1 teaspoon of carrier oil. Mix and apply with a cotton swab 3 times a day. Cover the spot with a bandage.

Scabies is caused by small mites that get under the skin and lay eggs which leads to skin irritation. The skin irritation can also develop into an infection.

Apply Tea Tree or  Lavender to the affected area at least twice a day. Skin should clear up in a few days.

Adding  Lavender to a bath will also help speed the healing process. Draw a warm bath and add about five drops of  Lavender oil to the water. This will help soothe the skin and provide some relief from the itching.

Other oils to use include Peppermint, Clove (clove is a powerful oil, it needs to be mixed with a carrier oil) and Rosemary, diluted in a carrier oil.

ADHD Over 2 million children have been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), leading to extensive dosing of prescription medication to control symptoms. Parents are frustrated with medicating their young children, while teachers struggle with the growing number of cases, and worry about the demands placed on the classroom environment.

Essential oils considered helpful for ADHD are Clary Sage, Cedarwood, Frankincense, Lavender, Rosemary, Peppermint, Lemon, Vetiver, Ylang Ylang, Sweet Marjoram, Chamomile, Spruce, Blue Tansy Patchouli & fractionated coconut oil.
Insomnia/Anxiety - Adequate sleep is also vital for attention and focus. The body obviously needs sleep to build up its energy for the next day, but this is also a time of significant repair. Keep the bedroom a dark and comfortable sleep sanctuary. If your child wants a night light, try to turn it off once they are asleep. Keep electronic gadgets such as televisions and video games outside of the bedroom, as they can become major sleep disruptions.

Blended Synergies For Anxiety: Tranquility, Angel, Release, Singles:   Neroli, Bergamot,Chamomile, Frankincense, Geranium (for balance), Lavender, Orange, Patchouli, Rose (for confidence), Sandalwood. Sweet Marjoram, Vetiver (for grounding)

When your child is feeling anxious, his or her breathing will change. When we are anxious, we tend to  take short, quick, shallow breaths or even hyperventilate.

Teach your Child a "Calm Breathing Tool". This is a tool you can use anytime, anywhere. Explain that taking short quick breaths actually increases other feelings of anxiety (e.g. heart racing, dizziness, or headaches). Calm breathing will slow down his or her breathing.  Putting a drop of the Essential oil of your choice, on your child's palm have them rub their palms together and hold hands cupped close to nose, then;

  • Inhale slowly for 4 seconds through the nose.
  • Ask your child to pretend that he or she is blowing up a balloon in the belly, so your child’s belly should inflate when inhaling.
  • Wait 2 seconds, and then slowly exhale through the mouth. Ask your child to pretend that he or she is emptying the balloon of air, so the tummy should deflate.
  • Wait 2 seconds, and then repeat.

Here's how to use Essential Oils to
Keep Ticks Away
And avoid Lyme Disease

With summer almost over and more and more cases of Lyme disease being reported, many are searching for ways to repel ticks without having to resort to harsh chemicals. Luckily, there is one sweet-smelling alternative that is proving to be quite powerful in the fight against this growing concern.
Something as simple and natural as rose geranium essential oil has been found to help ward off those pesky little parasites.
Ticks Operate mostly by Using their Sense of Smell
Ticks operate mostly by using their sense of smell. Ticks don't jump or fall from trees; instead, they do something called "questing." That is, they climb to the top of a blade of grass or plant and stick their front legs up in the air, waiting for the scent of a victim to walk by. If you find one on your head, then it crawled there. Their front pair of legs have what are called Haller's organs, which detect smell, temperature, movement and carbon dioxide. This is how they know that you are coming. And since it is well known that they like warmth and moisture, they are waiting for a warm, moist environment to call their home. The best part about this is that, for some reason, they are not attracted to the scent of rose geranium essential oil.

Most essential oils need to be diluted, but rose geranium does not fall into that category if used in small doses. So, because all you need is a few drops to do the job, a little most definitely goes a long way. Simply placing one drop on each ankle and on the wrists, then a little behind the knees and one on the back of the neck is all you will need to do the trick.

Other essential oils such as lavender, lemongrass, citronella, eucalyptus, and cedarwood have all been found to be helpful in repelling these unwanted guests as well.

Whatever scent you use, take caution and remember to double-check yourself from head to toe after coming in from a summer stroll.

"A free radical" is a cellular killer that wreaks havoc on your Body and Health
This cellular killer wreaks havoc by damaging DNA, altering biochemical compounds, corroding cell membranes, and destroying cells outright. In this sense, a free radical can be thought of as an invader attacking the cells of your body. More technically, a free radical is a molecule that has lost one of its electrons and become highly unbalanced. It seeks to restore its balance by stealing a vital electron from another molecule.
Scientists now know that free radicals play a major role in the aging process as well as in the onset of cancer, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, and possibly allergies and a host of other ailments. The link between free radicals and the “aging diseases” is the most important discovery since doctors learned that some illnesses are caused by germs.
In a very real sense, the free radical process in our bodies is much the same as the process that causes fuel to burn, oil to go rancid, or an apple to turn brown if you slice it open and expose it to air. It is as though our bodies rust from the inside out, causing, among other things, dry, wrinkled skin. But wrinkles are the least of our problems. When the process gets out of control, it can cause tumors, hardening of the arteries, and macular degeneration, to name just a few of the problems. Think of free radicals as ravenous molecular sharks—sharks so hungry that in little more than a millionth of a second, they can be making a frenzied attack on a healthy neighboring cellular molecule. A single free radical can destroy an enzyme, a protein molecule, a strand of DNA, or an entire cell. Even worse, it can unleash, in a fraction of a second, a torrential chain reaction that produces a million or more additional killer free radicals."
What can we do?
Antioxidants offer powerful, effective protection for your body and cells against their oxidative stress, by blunting the damaging effects of free radicals.
Some of it is completely out of our control, but we can watch what we eat, we can be sure to get as much rest as possible and try to keep stress levels down (often easier said than done). Avoid harmful chemicals that come in products we use around the home, on our children and ourselves.
Essential oils are still one of the richest sources of antioxidants on the earth.

Toilet Bowel Fresheners
The bathroom is a room that is used on a regular basis in every household and used by all members of the family. Because of this, it is so important to keep the bathroom bacteria free and as clean as possible! One really important surface is our toilet! It is a popular breeding ground for bacteria, and it’s our job to keep the bad stuff out, but what’s the best way? Well, with this recipe for natural toilet deodorizers, they also kill bacteria while they are making the bathroom and toilet smell great!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/3 Cup Of Baking Soda
  • 1/2 Cup Citric Acid - (Find this in citrus fruit like lemons and oranges)
  • 30 Drops Lavender Essential Oil. Also feel free to add others like Peppermint or Lemon Oil (30 Drops)
  • Silicone Baking Mold or I used half a plastic Easter egg as a mold and popped them out on wax paper to dry. Worked wonderful.

Instructions

  1. Mix together baking soda and the citric acid.
  2. Add oils drop by drop very slowly, constantly stirring in between drops.
  3. If mixture seems too dry add a few SMALL sprays of water from a spray bottle. One spray at a time and mix quickly, don't let it fizz as it can take away the fizzing effect.
  4. Place mixture in the molds and leave to rest for at least 6 hours or until hard.
  5. When dry, pop them out of the molds and store in a jar with a lid.
  6. Use one after every flush or whenever you want to freshen the toilet bowl.
