Aromatherapy - recipes for your health

The strength of essential oils used in aromatherapy, goes beyond harnessing the power of remembrance. The essential oils are extracted from plants and definitely impart their healing powers to the body through the sense of smell, however, they also have the ability to permeate the bloodstream. They have antibiotic, antibacterial, and tonic qualities that can relieve pain and stress, help balance the body and the mind, and even prevent disease. Besides, aromatherapy is enjoyable, whether you visit an expert aromatherapist for a massage or soak at home in a bath scented with your favorite essential oils.

Specific essential oils have specific properties that can alleviate particular symptoms or conditions. For example, Eucalyptus oil helps to clear congestion and regenerate bronchial tissue and lungs. While peppermint oil is good for relieving nausea and reducing a fever. Familiarity with just a few essential oils - and with the different ways they can be used gives us the power to self-treat many common ailments. Whether your trouble is physical, mental, or emotional, you may find relief in the use of aromatherapy.

Essential oil for Laryngitis;

Several daily applications of diluted  frankincense in a carrier oil (over the throat will help you get your voice back in a hurry. It's also helpful for the dry, hacking cough that accompanies bronchitis.

Essential oil mouth treatments are helpful for a variety of problems, including mouth ulcers and gum disease.

They can also be used on a daily basis for oral hygiene. Your next trip to the dentist will make you a believer! Oils such as myrrh, rose, and tea tree are good for gingivitis, while cypress and tea tree oils can help heal and prevent bleeding gums. Myrrh, basil, bergamot, and tea tree oil -  are helpful for healing mouth ulcers.

The appropriate oils can be used either as a mouthwash/gargle or in oil for a gum massage.

Select an essential oil; put a drop on your toothbrush along with your regular toothpaste, and brush as usual. To make a mouthwash, dissolve 3 to 5 drops of the essential oil of your choice from the list above - into a teaspoon of vodka or everclear, and then stir the mixture into a half-cup of warm distilled water. You may want to add a drop of peppermint oil to your recipe to improve the flavor. After brushing your teeth, or as needed, swish the mouthwash around in your mouth. To supplement the mouthwash, you may use a gum-massage oil. In a glass bottle with a dropper, mix one-fourth of an ounce of carrier oil with 20 to 25 drops of the desired essential oils, including 1 drop of peppermint oil or fennel for flavor. Before each use, turn the bottle upside down several times to mix, and then rub a few drops onto your gums.

Essential oils for a Migraine;
Lavender and peppermint oil will soothe both head pain and stress. Add a few drops of either to a carrier oil, and massage the temples. You can also add these oils to a cold compress. A beautiful blend for this would be My-Grain, my favorite is No-Mo-Pain. If your headache is brought on by sinusitis, use Eucalyptus and Peppermint in a steam inhalation.

Research on Therapeutic Essential Oils
In research done at Weber State University, therapeutic grade essential oils were sprayed in an enclosed atmosphere under controlled conditions to measure their effectiveness against various airborne life-threatening pathogens. They discovered that spraying essential oils in micro-fine vapor (within an enclosed atmosphere like a home) effectively destroyed infectious pathogens, while at the same time boosting one's immune system.

Make your own safe and effective sanitizer by mixing 4 oz. of Everclear from a liquor store (or you can use Vodka) with 1/2 oz. of Cleansing essential oil blend by Garden Essence or Tea tree oil (Melaleuca) and 2 oz. of water. Tea tree is natural and a very powerful antiseptic. You can use any essential oil or blend that best suites your need.

You can also spray this mix onto door handles, eating surfaces, toilet handles or anywhere else you are concerned about except electronic devices like keyboards etc.

The Weber State study proved conclusively that essential oils are even more effective and reliable than such antibiotics as Penicillin and Ampicillin. A virus or bacteria will mutate to defend itself against vaccines and antibiotics, but no pathogen has ever been known to mutate when confronted with essential oils.

Thyme essential oil is an excellent antiseptic, on account of the thymol it contains. A cup of water with 25 drops of thyme, kills the typhus bacillus (typhoid fever), and Shiga's bacillus (agent of epidemic dysentery) in 2 minutes. It can kill the colon bacillus in 2-8 minutes, streptococcus and diphoretic bacillus in 30 to 60 minutes. At a strength of 3-4 drops in 1 oz. of peroxide it destroys the mouth's microbial flora within 3 minutes, but be sure to rinse your mouth with water afterwards.

France in the late 1800s produced the following description. Lemon is second to none in its antiseptic and bactericidal properties. Diffussing Lemon essential oil neutralizes the meningiococcus in 15 minutes, the typhus bacillus in less than an hour, pneumococcus in 1-3 hours, staphylococcus aureus in 2 hours, and hemolytic streptococcus in 3-12 hours.

A mixture of Pine, Thyme, Peppermint, Lavender, Rosemary, Cloves, and Cinnamon can be used as a preventative for infectious childhood diseases (whooping cough, coryza of nasal catarra, influenza), and acute or chronic diseases of the respiratory tract in adults (influenza, tuberculosis, and pneumonia). Clinical observations proved that the disinfection of the air surrounding the patient had a therapeutic preventative effect.

Mother Nature has provided us with a bounty of essential oils designed to protect us from the air-borne and surface pathogens that cause most of our common, and some not so common diseases. At this time, when physicians are warning us not to use antibiotics as preventatives because the pathogens adapt in time and no longer die when they encounter the antibiotic, we have at our finger tips healthy, natural essences that are antibiotic without causing the pathogens to adapt. Essential oils, properly blended, can disinfect, and deodorize your home, your work place, and your own body with no negative side effects.

Here are some suggestions:
Put a few drops of lemon oil, and pine oil in a humidifier or an atomizer and let it run for a couple of hours a day in your home.
If you are concerned about breathing pathogens while outside your home, spray an all natural blend of disinfectant essential oils on your handkerchief, (or face masks) and breath deeply.

Got Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria? Use Essential Oils!
In a study performed by the Metropolitan University of Manchester, a vaporized essential oil blend containing lemongrass and geranium was tested against several strains of bacteria. The blend was found to reduce the spread of bacteria (including MRSA) on agar plates (with in a laboratory setting) as well as reduce the overall bacteria count in an office environment. The overall reduction of bacteria in the air was a staggering 89% with the diffuser running continually for 15 hours.

Several other studies have found blends of essential oils to be more effective than any single oil alone.

In actual human subjects, an essential oil blend eradicated MRSA infections from traumatic injury sites. This blend is formulated with 5 drops of eucalyptus, 5 drops of tea tree, 5 drops of thyme, 5 drops of clove and 5 drops of lemongrass essential oil diluted in 1/2 cup of everclear and 1/4 cup water. The blend completely eradicated MRSA infections where no supplemental antibiotics were used. This same formula treated chronic MRSA osteomyelitis (bone infection) that was unresponsive to antibiotics for two years.

Spring Time Sinus Health Tips:
Surprising Secrets for Sinus Health
Here are some all-natural ways to gain freedom from sinus suffering.

To Ease Sinuses:
2 drops peppermint
2 drops tea tree
2 drops eucalyptus
*2 drops ravintsara
Pour boiling water in a mug while still steaming add, 2 drops peppermint, 2 drops eucalyptus and 2 drops tea tree. Cup hands and slowly inhale for at least 3 minutes.
* Note eucalyptus can be drying, you could replace it with 2 drops ravintsara.

 • Clear your sinuses and your mind with a steamy stovetop spa. Add a few drops of wintergreen oil to a pot of boiling water and inhale the steam. Take care not to be burned by the vapor.
 • Herbs and spices like ginger, scallion, basil, garlic, oregano, cayenne peppers, white pepper, horseradish and turmeric will have your sinus passageways unblocked in no time!
 • The supplement bromelain - a papaya and pineapple-based enzyme - helps reduce histamine release, the body's natural allergic response.
Clear your nasal passageway daily for healthy, happy sinuses. Add 1 tsp of sea salt, 1 drop of oregano oil, and 1 drop of wintergreen to a cup of warm water. Fill a small-spouted squeeze bottle with this warm solution. Squirt into one nostril at a time and blow out through the nose. Alternate nostrils.
Press one clove of garlic, mix with 1 tsp of olive oil and soak a clean cotton ball with the oil mixture and place in nostrils after having washed the nostril with warm salt water. Leave in for 20 minutes and repeat three times a day until the symptoms clear up.
 • These two simple self-massage practices that follow are incredibly effective for relieving sinus congestion. For both, sit at the tip of a sturdy chair with your back erect, spine stretched, and your head tilted slightly forward.
     1. Inhale and gently press your forehead just inside the temples with your palms. Exhale and release.
         Repeat three times.
     2. Cross your middle and index fingers by placing the tips of your middle fingers on top of the
fingernails on your index fingers. Rub the sides of your nose 36 times in a circular motion,
warming your fingers first if they're cold.

What you eat affects your sinus health
Avoid the foods that produce mucous and dampness: dairy products, cold, corn (including corn syrup), and simple sugars. Choose whole grains like quinoa, amaranth and brown rice instead of wheat, rye and barley, which are typically high allergy grains. Opt for papaya, cranberries, pear, pineapple, cherries, mango, and citrus fruits. Eat more green vegetables such as artichoke, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, kale, cauliflower, and spinach.
Both alcohol and smoking should be avoided during a sinus flare-up as they irritate the respiratory tract and worsen nasal inflammation. Also, sinus congestion is often worse with lack of quality rest so be sure to get plenty of sleep and keep your stress level low.

Aromatherapy And Children

Aromatherapy is one approach to emotional well being and healing through the use of essential oils. Oils in aromatherapy have soothing effect on the body, mind and spirit.

A gentle touch, holding your child, a smile or a hug are forms of connection, bonding between the parent and the child. A loving nurturing touch of massage on the feet, arms, hands, back, abdomen and legs is therapeutic for both the child and parent, usually the mother. Fragrant essential oils used during the upbringing of your child supports your little one's health, happiness and well being.

Listed below are few commonly used essential oils that are used for children.

- Lavender oil is excellent home remedy for headaches, earaches and even insect bites.
- Geranium and rose oils act as a good skin softener, toner and natural astringent.
- Chamomile and peppermint oils prevent hair loss.
- Lavender, lemon rosemary and sage oils provide relief from dandruff.
- For any bruises and burns, use tea tree and lavender oils.
- Black pepper oil is good for constipation.
- Eucalyptus, neroli, ravintsara and tea tree oils alleviate coughs.
- Ginger, lavender and thyme oil works wonders on sore throats.
- Lavender and roman chamomile oil blend allows for restful sleep at night.
- Lemon, spearmint and grapefruit oils added to a tub of warm water for a bath refreshes the kid.

A word of caution for any parents planning on using aromatherapy oils on their children. Please exercise caution while using essential oils. Its best to stick to mild oils and less is best. Since essential oils are highly concentrated, make sure that they are properly diluted with carrier oils. Improper dilution can result in skin irritation for your little ones. Don't let your children be alone while using essential oils.
